Agassi overturns the opening set
Andre Agassi defeated defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov 3–6, 6–3, 6–2, 6–4 in the Australian Open men’s singles final on 30 January 2000. The American recovered after losing the opening set, then won three consecutive sets to claim the Melbourne title.
The route to the title
The championship followed a five-set semi-final against Pete Sampras. Agassi won that match 6–4, 3–6, 6–7, 7–6, 6–1, surviving the fourth set before taking the deciding set. That demanding semi-final and the comeback against Kafelnikov formed the final stages of his title campaign.
Place in the season
The 2000 victory was Agassi’s second Australian Open singles title, following his first in 1995. It began a period of repeated success in Melbourne: he would win again in 2001 and 2003. The tournament was played on outdoor hard courts, with the men’s championship match completing the two-week main draw.
